Performing at Echoes of the Macabre

There are performances you attend, and then there are performances you remember for years. Huihui Lou has a gift for making every show fall into the second category. There is something about the way she steps onto a stage that immediately draws you in, a warmth, a presence, an authenticity that you do not see every day. And this August, she is bringing all of that to one of the most exciting opera events of the summer.

Echoes of the Macabre is exactly what it sounds like, a thrilling, spine-tingling evening that celebrates the darker, more mysterious side of opera. We are talking spirits, séances, humor, and the supernatural, all brought to life by an outstanding cast of local, regional, and professional performers. The program features scenes from The Medium, Face on the Barroom Floor, and The Séance, a production that Lawrence Opera Theatre last staged in 2021 and that audiences still talk about, along with other haunting works that are sure to leave you on the edge of your seat.

The production is helmed by directors Hugo Vera, Samuel Kennedy, and Zachary Nelson, with music direction by Megan Widger. That is a seriously talented team, and the result is going to be something worth showing up for.

But let's talk about Huihui for a moment, because she is someone truly worth knowing. A Chinese soprano currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Voice Performance at the UMKC Conservatory in Kansas City, she has already built an impressive performance history across China, the United Kingdom, Italy, Serbia, and the United States. She has performed roles like Musetta in La Bohème, Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, roles that require not just a beautiful voice, but real emotional intelligence and creativity.

What makes Huihui special is not just technical ability, it is the way she connects. She does not just sing the notes. She finds the humanity in every character she plays and brings it to the surface in a way that makes the audience feel something. That is the kind of performer who stays with you long after the curtain falls.

She is currently participating in the Opera Festival of Chicago Young Artist Program, where she has already turned heads in their Young Artists Showcase and is set to perform in both La Bohème and Adriana Lecouvreur. She will also be joining Lawrence Opera Theatre this summer, and Echoes of the Macabre is one of those rare opportunities to see her perform in an intimate, atmospheric setting that perfectly suits her artistry.

If you have never seen Huihui Lou perform live, do not let this one pass you by. And if you have seen her before, you already know why this is unmissable.

Come for the supernatural. Stay for the soprano.
